News: Tire Recycling & Pyrolysis

As reported by RJA, a Spanish Royal Decree that will “accelerate the transition of the end-of-life tire sector towards a model of circular economy” had been approved by the Council of Ministers, on the proposal of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). The journal reports that, among other issues, the new law includes all tires over 1,400 mm in diameter and prohibits landfilling large end-of-life earthmover and agricultural tires, an issue that has been allowed until now. It also prioritizes the reuse of tires and further defines the conditions that both second-use tires and retreaded tires must meet for their subsequent sale.

Round 10 of the Australia’s Federal Government’s Cooperative Research Centres Projects (CRC-P) grants program is open, with $10 million available for projects that provide innovative solutions for the recycling and reuse of tires, plastics, paper and glass. Industry, Science and Technology Minister Karen Andrews said the funding builds on the $20 million invested in Round 8 to find smart solutions to managing Australia’s waste crisis. “Recycling our waste is more than an environmental imperative, it presents an opportunity for us to grow the economy and create new jobs,” she said.

Now the owners of "Dimantu kalns" plan to set up a mountain in their area, using old car tires at its base. Justifying the idea, the owner of the recreational complex, Peteris Dimants, says that end-of-life tires are widely used in the strengthening of dams, mountain bases and forest roads and referred to as old practice in Europe.

American engineers have developed a sensor that can monitor tire wear in real time. It has a radar that emits millimeter waves and, thanks to wave reflection, determines the depth of the remaining tire tread depth with an accuracy of 0.68 millimeters. In addition, it is capable of detecting foreign objects in the tread. An article on development was presented at the MobiSys 2020 conference

Ecopneus – Italian end-of-life tire management and recycling authority – says that thanks to the end-of-life tire recycling, over the years a real city of recycled rubber has been created at the Festambiente Festival: sports fields, cycle paths, play areas, urban furniture, relaxation areas were developed from the recycled material. In 2020 this list is supposed to be expanded with thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), Ecopneus says. Recycled rubber is confirmed as the protagonist of entertainment at Festambiente (Rispescia, Grosseto, 19 - 23 August), the festival which has reached its 32nd edition this year.
